I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to this wonderful Muslim community here in Jacksonville, Florida. My name is Omar Chatila, and I am the new Principal of Al-Furqan Academy. I have a Bachelors degree in Biology from the University of Maryland College Park, as well as a Masters degree in Management from Wake Forest University. I am moving here from Louisville, Kentucky, where I was the Vice Principal of the Islamic school there.
As you all know, Al-Furqan Academy has been established in this community since 1997 Alhamdulillah. Currently we have grades K-6 (Full tuition scholarships available through Step Up!), as well as a FREE VPK program. We are also planning on expanding our Middle School program next school year to offer grades 7 and 8 as well insha'Allah. We have a rigorous curriculum as well as a team of qualified teachers who are committed to the success of our students. So far we have about 120 students enrolled for the upcoming school year, with more new families registering as the first day of school approaches (this Monday, August 18). The school has come a long way since it was established back in 1997 Alhamdulillah, and insha'Allah I plan on leading our team of dedicated teachers and staff members to even go above and beyond by the help and mercy of Allah!
Our plan for this year is to improve the quality of academics of all subjects taught at our school (such as Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Islamic Studies, Quran, Arabic, Physical Education, etc.) as well as introduce new extracurricular activities and after-school clubs (such as Art class, Archery club, etc.). Our school is already accredited by the Florida Kindergarten Council (for grades Pre-K to 3rd grade), but we will also be looking to get the whole school accredited insha'Allah, including all Elementary and Middle School grades that we currently offer. We will also be reaching out to the families and parents and getting them involved in the Education of our students as well as in the continuous improvement of our school. We will be incorporating more assessments this year as well as using online tools to help us better track the progress of our students and target their individual learning needs.
Please join us this Saturday, August 16, from 10:00AM-12:00PM for the school wide orientation for all the students. I look forward to working with everyone in our community to further develop our school, and I am excited about all the engaging and educational programs and events that we have planned for our students for this upcoming year!
“.. Allah will elevate those amongst you who believe and those given knowledge to many levels..”
The believer is the one who never ceases to seek knowledge. We ask Allah to help us increase our knowledge. Allah says (Quran 20:114):
“And say Lord increase me in knowledge…” ".. وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِيْ عِلْماً"
Summer is over and our children will be returning to their schools and universities to seek knowledge. Most of the knowledge that they will acquire there will be geared towards their professional goals and understanding the world we live in. That is very important and I pray that Allah keeps them safe and focused and help them to achieve success in this life and the next. No less important, perhaps more so, is that we and our family also continue to seek knowledge of our Deen. It is only those who know Allah that truly fear and revere Him. In Sha Allah, I will be offering a series of classes on various Islamic topics. There are no fees for these classes but please register before they start. I am hoping for registration for all but the open classes as it creates a certain amount of commitment from the students towards the class.
The following is a list of weekly classes and sessions starting fromWednesday, August 20th, 2014 In Sha Allah:
Please do not forget to register your children for AlFurqan Academy, theSaturday or Sunday classes via the administration for those schools. In Sha Allah, I will be teaching in both the Saturday and Sunday school and also interacting with the children or AlFurqan Academy.

A famous scholar of Islam, Ibn Ata Allah Al-Iskandari, said, “What has he found, who has lost God? And what has he lost, who has found God?”
Finding God is so much easier in the House of Allah (Baitullah), than anywhere else. “In houses of worship (mosques), ….. is He (Allah) glorified in the mornings and in the evenings (24:36).”
Building and maintaining this house is a privilege, an honor and a humbling responsibility. And with all due humility, I am appealing to you to help your Islamic Center achieve its goal of raising $200,000 this Ramadan. Give a little or give a lot. But do give something.
The year 2014 started with the arrival of our new spiritual leader. Imam Shamu Shamudeen has been an exceptional spiritual guide and a trusted teacher. He has ably teamed with our Administrator, Yildirim Sivar, to make our Islamic Center not only more accessible but also more enjoyable for all who visit. Going forward, we will be leaning on their leadership in further improving the Islamic Center both from a spiritual perspective and also from in its operational professionalism. I will work with the Board to continually empower both our Imam and our Administrator, helping them to succeed in their respective missions. A marriage between professional full-time staff and spirited volunteers will better serve our community. We need both. Let us together help ICNEF move forward to its next stage of growth.
From khutbahs and lectures to social occasions such as playing basketball or enjoying fellowship, the Islamic Center gives us a place to nourish our souls with the beneficial knowledge and a lifetime of relationships. The Islamic Center is especially important for our children. It gives them an opportunity to learn and practice their faith in a safe environment and helping them to become dutiful servants of Allah.
In Sura Baqara, Allah (Glorified be He) praises people who give charity for only His sake, “...but righteous is he who believe in Allah…and gives wealth for love of Him… Such are they who are sincere…” (2:177)
