All of us are so fortunate that Allah SWT, with His infinite wisdom and mercy has placed us here in the Greater Jacksonville area where there is peace, tranquility and abundance of almost everything. It is not our place to question as to why he spared us the challenges of war torn places and deprivation. We must therefore, each in our way, and collectively, be most grateful for what He, The SWT, has Blessed us with. May He make us worthy of what He has given us.
Without beating around the bush, I would like to make an appeal for you to participate in constructing a school building at the ICNEF Campus. Thirty five years ago, those of us who were here, could never imagine that we will see such a beautiful Islamic Center in our lifetime. Yet, The SWT, in His mercy, guided thousands of Muslims who have been here, to share in this noble task. Besides having an appropriate place of worship, our focus has always been to teach Islamic values and traditions to our children. Those of us who were born in areas where majority of the people around were Muslim, had plenty of opportunities to learn such values and traditions. However, those who were not so fortunate and our children who were born here have a right to learn these values and traditions.
In early eighties, Dr. Qudratullah Mojadidi, who was the Secretary/Treasurer and the religious leader of our community, started teaching Islam to our children on Sundays. Rev. Jack Snell, Pastor of Hendricks Ave. Baptist Church was so gracious as to offer one of the classrooms in his church school building for us to use, which we did for quite a while. Over the years, literally thousands of Muslim children have learnt Islam in our Sunday School, Saturday Darul Arabiya, and in Al-Furqan Academy, our fulltime elementary school at the Islamic Center. I wish I could adequately share with you the gratitude I feel when I think of our children like my niece Dr. Leila Tolaymat who was born here like yesterday, learnt her Islamic values in our Sunday School, and now volunteers her time at the clinic for the needy managed by the Muslim American Social Services (MASS). No less important are the roles played by Samad Subedar or Omar Zainul Abedeen, and so many other children who are growing up and serving our community by teaching at the Sunday School or in other capacities. Needless to say, as a parent and as a member of this community, it is a responsibility that each of us must recognize and do our part to the very best of our abilities. There are over 500 children learning Islamic values and traditions in a morally responsible environment in the portable buildings used as classrooms at the ICNEF Campus. These buildings were acquired under a 7- year lease that would expire in two years, i.e. January 2017.
As you very well know, over the past three years, our community has gone through a lot of soul searching and has evaluated a lot of options for constructing a school building which could be used by all of the schools mentioned above. Finally, after evaluating all of the options and conducting a lengthy Town Hall Meeting, the ICNEF Board of Trustees at its meeting held on Sunday, November 23rd decided to approve construction of Phase-1 of the school building at the ICNEF Campus. This Phase-1 will be a single storey structure, will have 18,300 SF, and will provide all the facilities needed for early education. Building foundations will be constructed to support a 4-storey building so that with the passage of time, as the community grows, additional floors could be built to provide appropriate facilities for a high school. This building is being located where it was envisioned and designed by our architect Br. Khalil Ahmed Khan, in the ICNEF Campus Master Plan approved by the City of Jacksonville three years ago. As some of you know, Br. Khalil had the good fortune of working on the Mecca University Campus in Saudi Arabia, and with Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan (RA), the famous Structural Engineer who designed Sears Tower in Chicago.
The approved Phase-1 of the building is expected to cost $2 million, and we have two years to complete, i.e. that is when the lease on the existing portable buildings runs out. Those of you who have been here in Jacksonville for a while know the Islamic Center building was built in many phases over many years. This school building is no different. We will raise some money and start construction, “Tawaqal Allah”. And we will stop construction when the money runs out. We have made a commitment to the Board of Trustees that no contract will be awarded unless funds to cover at least 50% of the contract amount are available on hand. This is the same rule of thumb that was used to construct the ICNEF building. As it was, almost always, necessary funds became available when the time came to pay the bills.
Educating our children about Islamic values and traditions is a responsibility that each of us must recognize, regardless of whether our child attends any of the schools at the ICNEF. All day long, we are being bombarded with so much misinformation about Islam coming from likely and unlikely sources. We cannot and must not blame our children if they get confused, because they have not yet developed the filters that we adults sometime rely on. It will be unforgiveable and Allah SWT will no doubt hold each of us responsible if in spite of having the resources, we fail to build institutions to educate our children in morally responsible environments. That is why, I am making this earnest appeal for you to send your donation right now to get us started. By the time you receive this appeal, our engineers would be in the process of doing soil borings so as to determine appropriate designs for building foundations. Very soon thereafter, Insha Allah, you will see actual construction work started.
Please keep in mind that all donations received in response to this appeal will be used for the school building construction. All donations to the ICNEF have been Tax Deductible for Income Tax purposes since May 1979 (EIN: 59-1882880). Please CLICK HERE and select the Islamic School Building campaign to Donate online. Indeed all Guidance is from Allah SWT. May He Guide all of us to serve Him in the ways that are to Please Him. Ameen.
Wishing all of you good health and a prosperous 2015. Jazakum Allahu Khairan, Your Brother In Islam, M. Ashraf Shaikh Chairman, ICNEF Board of Trustees
